What is FASD?
"Support for Today Prevention for Tomorrow" F.A.S.D. = Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the continuum of physical, mental, and behavioral difficulties that can be found in individuals who were prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is not, in and of itself, a diagnostic term. Rather, individuals may receive one of the following common diagnoses under the FASD umbrella: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (PFAS), Alcohol Related Neuro-developmental Disorder (ARND), Neurobehavioral Disorder, Alcohol Exposed, and/or Static Encephalopathy. FASD Facts It is estimated that in Canada at least one child is born with FASD each day. * FASD is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and developmental delay in Canada. * People with FASD are at high risk of early school dropout, juvenile delinquency, drug addition, alcoholism, mental illness, crimes against property, vandalism, child and spousal abuse, unemployment and poverty. FASD is a serious health problem that affects children, families and communities. FASD is a life-long condition to which there is no known cure.
